Side by Side (byAlzheimer's Society Merton) is a new service preventing isolation and keeping people with dementia active and engaged in their community, enabling them to continue to ‘be themselves’ and live well with the condition, through regular (usually weekly) one-to-one meetings. As a volunteer, you will enable someone to continue (or start) participating in social and recreational activities, helping them to keep doing things they love such as listening to music, cooking, meeting up with friends or taking a walk in the park.
Your support gives them the confidence to take part and to value their own abilities, talents and potential to contribute and achieve.
This is an ongoing role with no fixed time limit: however we do ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months once relevant checks have taken place (consistency and reliability are vital for people with dementia). We ask for 2-3 hours a week, during the day, evenings or weekends. Please note: This role does not provide personal care, such as cleaning, washing or physical support.
This role is for you if you...
- Are an empathetic person with good communication and listening skills
- Are passionate about enabling and empowering people with dementia
- Have a committed, flexible approach
- Want to learn new skills and understand the lived experience of dementia
- Like being part of a great team making all the difference
Meetings take place at the service user's home and where a chosen activity is taking place (eg. Leisure Centre, park, museums)
We provide full training (covering topics such as understanding dementia, safeguarding vulnerable adults and keeping yourself safe), including a half-day face-to-face induction. We ask you to keep in regular touch with your placement supervisor, who will support you throughout your volunteering with us, discussing your experiences and any changes, issues or queries as well as discussing your personal learning and development needs.
