Sustainable Merton needs your help to fund Merton’s first community fridge!

As the CEO of  Sustainable Merton, Merton’s leading environmental charity, I am writing to seek your support for our new Community Fridge initiative by helping us to spread the word.  Bringing the first Community Fridge to Merton, this project offers an exciting opportunity to stop edible surplus food from going to waste, and instead make this available to those who are struggling to afford to eat.

I am very excited to share that Sustainable Merton’s Community Fridge project has been selected to participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2019, the U.K.’s largest match funding campaign. What does this mean? Through the Big Give Challenge, the first £2000 in donations made via to the Community Fridge project from 12pm on December 3rd to 12pm on December 10th will be matched! Therefore, donations made during this week will have twice the impact.

Why does Merton need a Community Fridge? The need for food assistance in Merton is rising. Between 2015-17, 33% of residents accessed local food banks. At the same time, huge amounts of good food is going to waste, filling up overflowing landfill sites and producing greenhouse gases. Merton’s local food banks are vital for people in crisis, but generally do not offer perishable food items. We know that many businesses and residents would donate fresh food if they had the opportunity. A Community Fridge in Merton will provide this essential link that does not exist in the borough at present.

Sustainable Merton’s Community Fridge will be a valuable contribution to the community, contributing to reductions in both greenhouse gas emissions and food poverty. Can we rely on your help to promote our campaign and ask for donations in support of the Community Fridge during the week of the Big Give Challenge? If so, thank you in advance! Sustainable Merton will contact you at the beginning of the Big Give week to ensure that all donations have twice the impact.

Thank you for considering to support this meaningful project. Please take a look at for more information. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch or email me.

Finally, please pass on this message to anyone who you think might be interested in supporting us and having their donation doubled.

I am really looking forward to Sustainable Merton setting up Merton’s first Community Fridge. Thank you for your help.
