Responsible to:                  Team Leader (or, in their absence, the Projects Manager)

 

Hours:                                 Tuesdays: 10.15pm – 12.45pm (2½hrs)

Additional hours occasionally required, eg for training, supervision, team meetings

Must be willing to communicate occasionally with line managers between club sessions

 

Pay:                                     £11.00 per hour at sessions

                                             (£9.75 per hour for any additional meetings/training)

 

Place of Work:                    Wimbledon (and various locations for activities)

 

Job Purpose

To deputise for the Team Leader where necessary and manage the staff (employees and volunteers), overseeing the safe delivery of activities at a service for adults with a learning disability and autism (service users)

Responsibilities/activities/duties

  • Work collaboratively with the Team Leader and Projects Manager to ensure service is provided in line with their instruction and funder requirements
  • Set an example to staff by providing high quality care and support for service users and manage staff to do the same
  • Lead on providing a person-centred service and support staff to so the same
  • Conduct pre-session meetings with staff (eg read care plans, risk assessments, agree session plan) and de-brief meetings with them after each session
  • Ensure session is provided in line with care plans and risk assessments; contribute to their update in liaison with the Team Leader and Projects Manager
  • Conduct quarterly supervision with staff (if required by Team Leader) making a brief record of discussions/actions
  • Help delegate responsibilities to staff during sessions, ensuring sufficient supervision is provided to service users and support to help service users engage meaningfully in activities
  • Co-ordinate the setting up and clearing away of equipment/materials, advising the Team Leader and/or Projects Manager of any new items needed
  • Support the evaluation of the service
  • Oversee that any emergency personal care needs are managed appropriately, if necessary, and to notify the parent or responsible carer in such instances
  • Ensure that any information which needs to be passed to the parent or responsible carer (e.g. details of accidents or incidents) is communicated promptly, clearly and professionally
  • In the event of any short-term absence (e.g. annual leave, sickness), support the Team Leader and/or Projects Manager to plan staff cover
  • Oversee the proper completion of any relevant paperwork and records connected with the project, in particular, registers, de-brief and session evaluation forms, incident forms and any service users’ development plans, and to ensure records are available at the Merton Mencap office before the deadline provided
  • Be familiar with and act in accordance with the procedures for health and safety regulations at any premises where project activities take place, particularly fire evacuation procedures, and to be responsible for ensuring all project staff, service users and any visitors are familiar with the same
  • Operate within Merton Mencap’s standards, policies and procedures and code of conduct, in particular policies and procedures which relate to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, health and safety practice and equal opportunities
  • Be willing and to make reasonable efforts to be available to undertake necessary training to keep up to date with current issues and good practice relating to working with people with a learning disability, in particular training associated with safeguarding and health and safety
  • Undertake other training, such as in medical needs, moving and handling, personal care and challenging behaviour and, if required, to carry out duties in those areas in the context of Merton Mencap’s policies and procedures
  • Be willing to work outside normal hours and to be occasionally contacted out of hours, as necessary
  • Take part in any project meetings to plan or review services, as necessary
