The number of volunteers in charity shops has fallen by around 6 per cent, according to data from this year’s Charity Shops Survey. The survey, published by Charity Finance and Fundraising magazines, and sponsored by the Charity Retail Association, collected data from 75 charities which between them have around 137,000 volunteers in their shops. One of the Wimbledon Guild’s most popular volunteers is celebrating two milestones this week – her 50th birthday and clocking up more than 5,000 hours of volunteering. Noreen Sheridan, who has Down’s Syndrome, is a valued member of the team, where she holds a special place in the hearts of customers and staff. A buddy volunteer is a friendly and reliable mentor that our young people can build a trusting relationship with. You don’t need to have a background in working with young people, just be willing to listen and share experiences. It’s very important that their buddies are reliable and you must be available for half an hour once a week on Monday mornings from 10am (term-time only). Christian CARE is a charity working in the London Borough of Merton. They are a group of 30 volunteers from 17 different churches and welcome and offer help to anyone whatever their race, colour or religion. Each year they support over 100 families whose lives are in crisis.
