Merton Council is encouraging residents to apply to close their road for a street party on 8, 9 or 10 May in celebration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day. A number of retailers are donating profits to mental health charities this week, following the death of TV presenter Caroline Flack. Fashion retailer In The Style launched a limited-edition “Be Kind” t-shirt – inspired by Caroline Flack’s Instagram post in December – promising to donate 100 per cent of profits to Samaritans. As we continue to celebrate Student Volunteering Week – we take this opportunity to shine a light on 8th Wimbledon Scout Group. Based in Wimbledon, the 8th Wimbledon has a strong history (over 100 years old!). They have a thriving Beaver Colony (6-8 years), Cub Scout Pack (8-10½ years) and Scout Troop (10½-14 years) and provide fun activities, adventure and challenge for young people aged 6-14. Earlier this year, Merton Council launched a new hate crime advice surgery in partnership with charity Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks). Merton was the first borough in south London to work in conjunction with Tell Mama to run these sessions. Aimed at raising awareness and supporting victims of hate crime – the surgeries are a safe space for discussing hate crime and reporting anonymously.  From January 2020, the new times for these meetings are 12pm – 1pm.
