Wimbledon Cancer Friendship Group Wimbledon Guild SW19 4EF |
Wimbledon |
Email |
This group aims to offer friendship, support, information and a listening ear to anyone affected by any cancer. It meets twice a month in the Wimbledon Guild in the Worple road, Wimbledon. On the second Thursday of the month it is an evening meeting, between 7.30-9pm, with a speaker and there is an informal drop in session on the third Thursday of the month between 3.15-4.30pm. They take it n turns to welcome the visitors or to facilitate the sessions. Most visitors want to talk about their treatment, how they are feeling and enjoy meeting others who are or have been in the same boat. Not all the chat is about cancer and the range of monthly speakers is very wide - complementary therapies, diet, exercise,, local and national support organisations, We are looking for new volunteers to help us . The volunteer needs to have had cancer ( need to be at least 2 years after the end of their treatment) or else have personal experience of what someone with cancer may be going through. There is training in Listening and Responding available through Macmillan. The existing volunteers are very experienced and supportive and will make the new person very welcome.. Volunteers may only need to attend one meeting a month and there is meeting for the volunteers about every 6 weeks to arrange the rota for the meetings. An independent registered charity based in Wimbledon, the Wimbledon Community Association was founded in 1946 with the aim of promoting the wellbeing of the broad community. Over recent years, following the closure of their popular community centre in the heart of Wimbledon, the new Board of Trustees has refocused the charity on a new mission; to 'connect people with venues that provide community space for hire, and to develop an online community hub that enables sharing of news, best practice and networking in our local communities'. A new website, 'wimblecomm', was launched to the general public in September 2016. It hosts a directory of community venues and a community noticeboard, with further features under development for launch in 2017.
