Befriending Volunteer for Older People

Age UK Merton Befriending Service is open to any isolated person over 65 living in Merton who is housebound, living alone, recently bereaved or with a diagnosis or long term condition. Age UK Merton is looking for volunteers to match with clients and make a once a week hourly visit to befriend and support the older person.

Volunteers will be visiting older people in their own homes once a week for an hour for a social visit. The volunteers will be chatting to the clients and making sure they are ok and helping to ensure their wellbeing . They may assist clients with small tasks around the house to enable the person to feel supported for example programming their TV remote, helping them with their IPAD or reading mail or picking up dropped items on the floor.

The idea of befriending is to reduce loneliness and isolation and improve the well being of clients.

Volunteers need to commit to a minimum 6 month commitment and be reliable

Skills:

  • Volunteers need to have good listening and communication skills
  • Volunteers need to be patient and understanding
  • An ability to understand and be aware of safeguarding issues
  • An ability to operate effectively without supervision
